NYCOSH 9/11 immigrant worker health and education project

About the project

The New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) has received a September 11 recovery grant from the American Red Cross, Liberty Disaster Relief Fund to conduct outreach to immigrant workers who were involved in the rescue, recovery and clean-up efforts at the World Trade Center.

The goals of this project, which has received one year of initial funding, are:

  • To conduct outreach to immigrant worker communities by offering seminars that will better educate these workers on the 9/11-related medical and other services that may available to them;

  • To raise awareness of post-9/11 issues in the immigrant worker communities by developing and distributing educational materials, and by airing public service announcements about services available for this group of workers, in an effort to better connect them to appropriate services;

  • To partner with several community-based organizations and unions that have been involved in 9/11-related activities to better coordinate efforts on behalf of these workers;

  • To coordinate the formation and development of a 9/11 Immigrant Worker Health and Education Council that will provide a conduit for workers, community-based organizations and unions to organize for greater attention to the post- 9/11 needs of this population.
