Thousands of immigrants responded to
the greatest disaster in New York City’s history and
many worked cleaning up Ground Zero.
Now many are suffering from health
problems associated with that work. If you are one of those
workers and you need help, here is a list of services that
are STILL available for those who are eligible.
Health Services
If you worked at Ground Zero, you can receive a free medical
screening at the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring Program.
Even if you are not experiencing any symptoms at this
time, it’s important to get screened now, so you can
be eligible for the program if you happen to develop health
problems in the future that are related to your work at Ground
Zero. And if you need additional services, WTC Program
staff can refer you to a case manager who will try to help
you.

Mental Health Services
Many suffered psychological effects from working at Ground
Zero. If you have had problems sleeping, suffer from panic
attacks, feel jittery or nervous, or have been having problems
communicating with your family, these symptoms could be from
your 9/11 work.
Many programs are available to help
those who are suffering mental anguish. The Red Cross has
several programs that can refer you to counseling, and they
can refer you to a case manager who can help you get you additional
services that may be available, if you are eligible. Some
of the programs include:
- outpatient counseling services
- substance abuse counseling
- medications paid for mental health conditions

Financial Assistance
There are several programs that may offer some financial assistance
to disaster responders. Some benefits include:
- short-term cash assistance
- Payment for uncovered health costs
In order to get any of these benefits,
you need to work with a case manager who can determine how
to best meet your need, if you qualify.

Many workers think that they are not
eligible for any assistance if they do not have legal status.
THAT’S NOT TRUE. Most of these programs do not request
any information about legal status. If you have any concerns,
